'Kincsünk A Piac - Hunyadi Tér' (Hunyadi square – the market is our treasure): With this motto, a neighbourhood group started in Budapest in summer 2007. It reacted against the apparently illegal contract between the local government of the inner city’s 6th district and an offshore company that wanted to 'rehabilitate' the Hunyadi square and its market hall. The plans developed without the involvement of the affected people would result in the disappearance of the farmers' market from the square, the move of the current market function of the hall to a level below the ground, the conversion of the hall into a 'House of Europe', and the building of an underground parking involving the loss of probably 1/3rd of the trees on the square.
